(Fair use via Wikipedia)

Most of the interpretaions are pretty patriarchal and sexist but this would have been identified as a goddess by archaeologist Marija Gimbutas. See video on Gimbutas in the post below.

On my OriginsNet blog I propose that this figurine is covered with geometric signs and scarification marks, and interpret these as evidence for female puberty initiation rituals, with parallel to later Gravettian 'Double Goddess' (grandmother-mother-daughter) symbolism that continues into the Neolithic of Europe.

Scroll down to my June 12, 2009 post where I indicate the geometric signs.
